The Benefits of Eggs and Oil for Hair

The Benefits of Eggs and Oil for Hair

If you've got a cracked egg, don't throw it away! Save it for a hair masque. Please use free range eggs, so chickens get to run around freely without being trapped or forced into small cages. Every animal deserves to enjoy and live a happy life. :)

What are the benefits of using eggs on hair? Hair is made up of 70 percent protein called Keratin, when your hair is dry, damaged and wispy, your hair is craving for a protein boost. Eggs contain various vitamins and minerals including high-quality protein and biotin that your hair will greatly benefit from. When a hair strand is damaged, egg protein helps to fill in those weak dry strands and split ends, making your hair feel stronger, smoother and conditioned.

Due to the amount of protein present in eggs, an egg hair masque should not be left in your hair for longer than 20 minutes, too much protein can actually damage your hair. It is also recommended to use an egg hair masque once every month.

Eggs and oil for hair

Some ingredients that you can find in your kitchen cupboard are, olive oil, sunflower oil and coconut oil. I decided to add all of these ingredients together with the eggs and my hair has never felt so soft!

Extra virgin olive oil benefits for hair

I recommend using extra virgin olive oil whenever possible. Extra virgin olive oil is extracted from olives using natural methods, it is not processed or mixed with other cheaper oils thus retaining its level of antioxidants. Olive oil is an excellent moisturiser for both hair and skin. It is rich in vitamin E, K, fatty acids, saturated fat, monounsaturated fats and omega 3 & 6. If you don't tend to include olive oil in your food, you should definitely start thinking of incorporating this oil as part of your diet due to its many health benefits. Its anti-inflammatory properties help reduce the risk of cancer, stroke, reduce joint pain, protects against heart disease, prevents blood clotting and weight gain and it even helps fight against Alzheimer's disease.

This amazing oil is the perfect hair masque for your hair if you suffer from an irritated itchy scalp, dandruff, dry ends, split ends, frizzy hair or unmanageable hair. You could either apply the oil cold or you could warm it up lightly in the microwave as an intense moisturising masque. Just a bit of olive oil can really turn your wispy dry hair into soft and conditioned locks!

Sunflower oil benefits for hair

Sunflower oil is high in vitamin E, it is an antioxidant that protects the body from harmful substances. Food high in antioxidants are known to prevent harmful radicals that are responsible for ageing. The vitamin E in sunflower oil encourages healthy hair growth by reducing scalp inflammation and repairing damaged follicles. Hair becomes silky and soft to touch when applied to the length of the hair, making the hair more manageable especially for those who suffer from dry, frizzy and damaged hair.

Coconut oil benefits for hair

Coconut oil is a solid oil at room temperature and will need to be lightly heated for it to melt and to be applied to the hair. Coconut oil contains a high content of saturated fats called lauric and capric acid, which help improve hair health, quality and hair growth. Coconut oil is a wonderful natural oil to use as a conditioner and perfect for people who suffer from dry, irritated and dandruff prone scalps. Coconut oil contains antimicrobial and anti-fungal properties that help target fungus and bacteria that may be lurking on your scalp, making it the perfect natural oil to go to when treating irritated scalps.

Mixing eggs and oils for a hair masque

The following mix of ingredients provides you with plenty of masque mixture. I used 3 eggs because they were all cracked and I didn't want them to go to waste. I have used half of the mixture and froze the rest for next time. I did use a kitchen blender for a smooth finish, but you could use a fork or a whisk to mix the mixture if you don't have a blender to hand. Just apply the mix to your scalp and the length and ends of your hair, cover your hair with a shower cap and leave on for 20 minutes or so and then wash your hair as normal.

Will the egg mixture turn into a scrambled egg if I use hot water?

I have always experimented with natural ingredients so I thought i'll try this masque with warm-hot water to wash it off and see what happens!

I recommend everyone to use cold water whenever possible to wash your hair, it really does make a difference and is actually much more beneficial to your hair as cold water helps to close the cuticle and seal in moisture from the hair masque or conditioner that you're using.

In the past, when I tried an egg masque on its own, I knew that if I wash my hair with warm/hot water, your hair will turn into a lovely scrambled mess! I did try this anyway, and yes I had pieces of 'cooked' egg on my hair and it was a nightmare to get rid of. So, if you're using just an egg masque, remember to wash your hair with cold water.

Egg and Oil masque mix - I am pleased to say that I didn't have any egg pieces in my hair, and I do love a hot shower! So, if you're like myself, you're completely safe from a scrambled egg hair masque mess if you're adding oil to your egg mix and warm/hot water to wash it off.
